Fellowships

What you must demonstrate

What we look for in a potential Clore Fellow.

Each year the Clore Leadership Programme offers a number of Fellowships to talented potential leaders either working in or with the cultural sector.  We are not looking for perfectly formed leaders, but we are keen to offer Fellowships to exceptional individuals who are ambitious to lead, and take responsibility for themselves and their actions.  If you wish to be considered for a Fellowship, you will need to be able to demonstrate the qualities listed below and explain in your application how the Fellowship will make a difference to you.

You should normally have a total of at least 5 years' paid work experience, either in employment, self-employed or freelance. Most Fellows have been working for between 5 and 10 years when they start the Programme.

We offer Fellowships to exceptional individuals who are either working within the cultural sector, or who are working outside it but demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and passion for culture.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate ambition and proven achievement in their professional life, as well as most or all of the attributes listed below.

Above all, we're seeking people who lead:

Authentically - know themselves and are true to themselves, can build relationships and create the conditions for others to excel; are self aware, they recognise their strengths and the gaps in their experience, and can identify clear personal objectives for the Fellowship

With passion - and purpose, motivation, determination and drive that they can communicate to others, both within and outside their organisation or specialism; people who are powerful advocates and politically astute, able to convey a convincing narrative

Strategically and courageously - are optimistic; have the knowledge, judgment courage and resilience to seize opportunities and take decisions. They can assess risk, be resourceful and make choices, even when coping with ambiguity, uncertainty and complexity; are alert and entrepreneurial; and can demonstrate proven achievement in their professional life, translating vision into action

Creatively - with the flexibility to think laterally, innovate, solve problems and encourage change. They have the ability to analyse complex information, assess risk and make choices, and the confidence and courage to take decisions

With an enquiring mind - and the capacity to reflect and learn, with curiosity beyond their current specialism and an awareness of the wider context

With integrity - they should demonstrate honesty, authenticity, humility and openness, and welcome diversity. They have the ability to motivate and develop others; to set high standards for themselves and others; to form, value and give inspiration to a team, to be hands-on and to delegate when appropriate.

Importantly, we are looking for people who lead delivery, can translate vision into practical actions and are focused, realistic and self-motivated.  They communicate effectively in writing, speaking, and in groups; are competent and comfortable with technology, skilled in presentation and negotiation and sensitive to others' interests.

We will also be looking for the extra imaginative "spark" that marks an outstanding potential leader. This should give us an indication that the individual will be able to initiate and innovate, to energise and inspire, as well as deliver.
