Clore Leadership's Board Development Programme helps individual Board Members, CEO/Artistic Directors, Chairs and Board teams to:

  • Address the particular challenges of working together in the cultural sector
  • Challenge perceptions of best practice
  • Harness creativity and clarity of thought, and
  • Realise their aspirations for their organisation through actionable and measurable outcomes that will develop sustainability and resilience.

What we offer

Chair/CEO Training Days

We are now accepting applications for our Summer 2018 series of Chair/CEO Training Days: a bespoke, pragmatic and high energy session which will help to give the Chairs and CEOs/Artistic Directors of organisations the tools they need to work together in ensuring that their organisations can navigate the waters of artistic risk, financial information, legal responsibilities, strategic planning, finance, diversity, recruitment and succession planning. 

This day provides a thorough grounding in the best practise of modern governance, led by our experienced trainers. By the end of the day you will:

  • Be up-to-speed on current developments in governance;
  • Have plenty of best-practice examples of effective governance from across the arts and culture sector;
  • Have considered the relationship between the Chair and CEO/Artistic Director, reviewed whether it is working, and whether anything could be changed;
  • Have received specific guidance and advice from governance experts;
  • Have a practical toolkit to respond to the issues facing your board/organisation.

The days will be held on:

  • Thursday June 14th 2018 from 10am to 4:30pm, Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High St, London E1 7QX
  • Monday July 2nd 2018 from 10am to 4:30pm, Sage Gateshead, Gateshead NE8 2JR
  • Wednesday September 12th 2018 from 10am to 4:30 pm, Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High St, London E1 7QX

Who is it for?

This course is a priority for Chairs and CEOs/Artistic Directors of arts and cultural organisations based in England who are interested, as a pair, in learning more about the principles of effective governance, and who are ready to interrogate their own practice in order to improve it. We are particularly keen to ensure that we are supporting National Portfolio Organisations.

The Chair/CEO days are supported by Arts Council England, through a three-year grant to develop sector leaders working in England. The fee for the course is £300 + VAT. Successful organisations will be invoiced for this fee upon being accepted onto the course. The fee is non-refundable.

Prue Skene

Clore Leadership Programme Associate, Board Development

Prue Skene is Chair of Cardboard Citizens, Vice President of the Nureyev Foundation and a Trustee of the Rosie Kay Dance Company.  An experienced arts manager, she has been chief executive of both Ballet Rambert and the English Shakespeare Company and Director of the Arts Foundation, a charity that gives Fellowships to artists in all disciplines.  More recently she has worked as a freelance consultant for, amongst others, Dance UK, the Rayne Foundation and Arts Council England. 

Her non-executive appointments have included President of the Theatrical Management Association, Trustee of NESTA and Friends of the V&A, a non-executive Director of Royal United Hospital NHS Trust and of Bath Theatre Royal, and Chair of the Arvon Foundation, Rambert Dance Company, Free Word and the Stephen Spender Trust.  From 1992-2000 she was a member of the Arts Council of England, chairing its Dance and then Lottery Panels. She was awarded a CBE in the 2000 Birthday Honours List for services to the arts, especially dance.

Prue is a Governance Associate of the Clore Leadership Programme and in 2007 initiated a Board Development programme for that organisation which she has subsequently led, delivering Board awaydays for over 50 organisations throughout Britain and training days in which around 170 Chairs, Board members and CEOs of cultural organisations have participated.  She also gives governance sessions on the Clore Short Courses and to many individual arts organisations.  Her book, Capital Gains:  How the National Lottery transformed England’s arts was published in October 2017.

Tom Wilcox

Partner, Counterculture

Tom Wilcox is Senior Partner at Counterculture, a specialist strategic and financial consultancy providing finance/accounting, governance, business and strategic planning, capital projects, HR, fundraising and IT services to the arts, creative enterprises and charities. Tom’s clients include Tate, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, De La Warr Pavilion, Rambert Dance Company and the Lakeland Art Trust.

Tom started his career in higher education, before moving to PriceWaterhouseCoopers' charity/public sector department. He has subsequently worked in the arts including at Arts Council England, The Poetry Society, Siobhan Davies Dance Company and Whitechapel Gallery; where he spent almost seven years in the role of Managing Director, completing a £13m expansion of the gallery in April 2009.

Tom is a Fellow Chartered Company Secretary and qualified accountant. With a strong interest in the arts and the public realm, Tom is a trustee of Gallery Estates Trust. He is also a Clore Governance Associate, and a musician/producer.

How you learn...

We offer customised away days for Boards and executive teams and training days for Chairs and CEOs coming as a pair.

The training is very practical and break-out groups are encouraged to identify action points. These are then listed in a report/action plan which is delivered to the organisation/participants within two weeks of the day.  The training covers issues such as artistic risk, financial information, legal responsibilities, strategic planning, diversity, recruitment and succession planning. The Clore team for the day will normally consist of a course leader, financial expert and a facilitator.

  • A firm grounding in the principles and legal requirements of governance
  • Addressing of specific issues connected with their organisation
